Over 20 years ago, I became a mother for the first time. I wasn’t a published author then; although I’d written a few hundred poems, writing a book was the farthest thing from my mind.

My husband at the time was working full-time to support us, and I stayed at home with the baby (a baby who’s now an adult!). Like so many people out there, my family has a history with Avon. I have sisters and a mother who were Independent Sales Representatives (reps) at different points in their lives.
I remember when I was a little girl & had a sample of Soft Musk (a great classic fragrance that is still around today). In those days, fragrance samples were little pouches that you’d rip open, and inside would be a square of cotton that would be soaked with the perfume. You would take it out and swipe it onto your wrists.

Fragrance samples are quite different now, and a bit more sophisticated. ;) Still, the good ol’ days! I remember loving Soft Musk so much that I’d keep the open pouch on my dresser, leaned up against something so that I could use it again. LOL!

I’m going to interrupt myself here to ask – how much do you really know about Avon? We’ve all heard of it, and chances are you think of it as a company that sells poor quality products. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Avon’s founder, David McConnell, first sold books door-to-door in the 19 century. He then decided to sell perfumes instead and soon Avon was formed, a company that prides itself in the up-close-and-personal nature of selling face-to-face, an environment in which a customer has a unique relationship with the representative.

The products, especially the skin care products in my personal opinion, are just as good if not vastly superior to its department store counterparts – products that are selling for twice as much as Avon’s! It never made sense to me to spend so much money if you didn’t need to.

In the summer of 2017, I realized I needed to take care of my face because I was entering my 40’s but knew nothing about skincare. Rather than head to the mall and ask some random stranger for advice (and hope that I happen to stumble upon a friendly, knowledgeable person), I knew it was time to return to Avon. Since I had already been a rep once, I knew that reps received separate catalogs announcing the prominent items in upcoming brochures that are jam-packed with useful information. I would have the inside knowledge I was looking for, and on top of it all, I would get a rep discount and I wouldn’t have to worry about fulfilling quotas (the fee for the starter kit is $25, $50, or $100, & there are no minimum order amounts, no monthly fee, no annual fee).

So I joined! I was stunned to discover that reps had a multitude of sources for information, thanks to the internet (I didn’t have that 20 years ago). In the last year I’ve been really impressed by the innovative ways that Avon is helping reps make their most of their business: company website, individual website, an online university with free interactive training, a separate website that makes it easy to post and plan timed posts for all your social media accounts… and so, so much more. There’s also some pretty fun and helpful groups on Facebook just for reps.

I have to say, one thing I really appreciate about Avon is that there is no pressure at all, no one hovering over you, telling you what to do or how to do it. You have the freedom to work on it every day or once in a blue moon; it’s all your choice and it’s a godsend for my anxiety-riddled self.

A note about Avon’s products: They have SO MUCH MORE than makeup and perfume. So much! In the last couple years they’ve started and developed their wellness line, Espira (pronounced es-SPEAR-uh), that has naturally-sourced ingredients and vegan supplements. This is just the beginning though and I don’t want to hijack my own article, so check out Espira for yourself! :)



My personal favorites from Avon’s entire product listing are the fragrances and the face care. These are the products I’ve decided to specialize in, but everyone Avons differently. :) (Yes, I’ve made Avon into a verb! LOL!)

There are reps who are mainly with Avon for the Espira, male reps who specialize in men’s products, and the list goes on and on. Avon has clothes, jewelry, shoes, accessories, bubble bath, foot care, hair care, a variety of lotions, deodorants, scented candles, home décor, and so much more.

Every few brochures usually boasts a brand-new product that has been lab-tested, so to post the new products in this article wouldn’t make much sense as they’re always coming out with someone new and amazing!

So really, I’m with Avon because I love it and it definitely enhances my life. I would love nothing more than to share that opportunity with others. :)
